Indigo Blue - A Historic Blue
PB29 + PBr7 + PB15 - Opaque - Moderately Granulating
With its granulating texture and natural depth, Indigo Blue is perfect for representing dramatic atmospheres, starry skies, or reflections on water. Its ability to layer in fine washes or be used opaquely makes it a favored choice for artists seeking variety in their compositions.
Indigo Blue is valued for its versatility and intensity. It evokes the mysteries of the night sky and the depth of the oceans. Traditionally made from the plant Indigofera tinctoria, this pigment has a long history, particularly in textiles, before becoming a staple in artists’ palettes. Today, natural indigo has been replaced by a combination of modern pigments offering excellent stability, as natural indigo lacks permanence.
Indigo Blue is ideal for creating deep, complex shades. When mixed with Burnt Sienna, it produces warm, nuanced greys, perfect for stormy skies or shadows. Combined with Saffron Yellow, it creates muted greens, ideal for natural landscapes. With Isaro Rose or Pyrrole red deep, you achieve dark purples, perfect for nocturnal or floral scenes. When mixed with Cerulean Blue, it creates a soft, atmospheric gradient effect in skies and horizons.
I really care about who my colors are for. If I do this job it is above all not to satisfy customers or gain market share but to satisfy artists. So I hope that they can be seduced by the power of the colors and their brightness.
